How Do I Do This Blog Hop Thang?

If you’re new to blogging OR just new to Blog Hops, (or need a reminder), here’s what you do:

  1. The post that you want to submit to the Blog Hop needs to have a link back to the Blog Hop either with a Button (provided for you below) or with a text link.  For example you might say in your post…”This post was shared on Thursdays @ the Homestead Blog Hop”, or “I participated in Thursdays @ the Homestead Blog Hop” and this would generally go at the end of your post.  Either the button or the text link is fine.  How do you make the link?  Copy the URL of Thursdays @ the Homestead from your browser address bar.  Then click or highlight your button or text, then click the “link” button on your blogging tool bar and paste the URL into that line.  Save and that’s it.

Here’s the button:

Master Brownie Mix

Cake mixes, brownie mixes, canned pie fillings and puddings are some of the more common pre-made food most Americans keep in our pantries.  But you save a lot of money and avoid any ingredients that commercial producers may use in pre-packaging something you can easily make yourself.  Part of building your own store is learning to make the foods that you rely on buying at your local grocers.  Here is a delicious brownie mix I have all the time.  Like with any brownie mix, you can adapt it to make them just exactly the way you love them.  Cover them with icing, add chocolate or butterscotch chips, marshmallow or nuts.  You have total control. Learning to use the foods you store develops the skills you may have no choice but to face in tough financial and economical times.

My very dear Portuguese friend, Natalia is one of the best cooks I know. She is also one of the most creative. This is an adorable presentation of her homemade Kahlua Liqueur. No, I do not drink. But every once in awhile . . .  I was successful in urging her to share this recipe with me and I now offer it to you. Remember, have things on-hand that others will want. You don’t need to be a drinker to start having some alcohol in your supplies. Also, many whiskies work well in home remedies for illnesses and pain relief.

4 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/2- 3/4 cup instant coffee (not freeze-dried)
1 quart of cheap vodka
1 whole vanilla bean (cut into 1/4-1/2 inch pieces)
1 Tbsp glycerine
Boil water and sugar the same as you would for a simple syrup for 5-10 minutes. Add instant coffee and remove from heat. Add vodka, glycerine and vanilla bean. Put in an airtight container and store in a cool & dark spot. Gently shake and roll the bottle every day to mix and blend all the ingredients.Allow it to set up for 2 weeks.

After 2 weeks, strain thoroughly and completely until all vanilla caviar and other debris is removed. Transfer your finished product into a bottle and enjoy.

You never know when Gods’ messages will come to you.  My neighbor boy who is 9 years old is over today helping me sort through the thousands of toys I have somehow accumulated for the grand babies over the past four years since CJ first came into our lives.  Many are missing parts, many others have been outgrown and will be better served in new homes with new little boys and girls.  The task is huge. My little friend next door must be bored or in need of money, but he offered to come help me today with whatever I needed.  Yay for me!

This is a prep that I put into the category of preps that you would never think about, and if you have kids, they will love you for this one! What is this magic prep you ask?

“Candy is nature’s way of making up for Mondays.” ~Unknown Author

Yes that is right candy is prep, specifically hard candy. Remember prepping is more than just bare bones survival, the goal is to keep life worth living and having a creature comfort like hard candy can be a real psychological boot to the mind and the soul. If you have children this can be a wonderful treat to raise spirits and restore a little piece of normalcy to their lives, in a time…
